It is easy to appreciate and understand the importance of surfactants towards detergents and personal care products where our lives are touched directly, but a lesser-known fact is that mining, and oil & gas are also industries where surfactants are important. Surfactants are applied in the stimulation of hydraulic fracturing, enhanced oil recovery, in the extraction of oil from oil sands, as well as the beneficiation of minerals. The efficiencies of these processes are determined largely by the surfactants being applied. Without them, we wouldn't have spodumene at the concentration needed for lithium battery production. We wouldn't have cost effective access to the "non-traditional" oil reserves.
