Applying Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) Approach to Product Portfolio Improvement

Stepan has an ongoing commitment to deliver innovative products from responsibly sourced materials, that promote energy efficiency, improved health and wellness, and a reduced environmental impact. This goal is essential to enable the world’s transition towards a safe, reduced-waste, lower-emission, and resource-efficient economy, while allowing Stepan to offer our customers and end consumers better solutions for their cleaning needs. Stepan has initiated implementation of a custom fit SSbD approach, which will guide the design or ‘re-design’ of our products to support and integrate informed decisions about safety and sustainability, considering effects throughout their lifecycle. In this presentation, Stepan will share its recently developed strategy to improve our product portfolio, which includes: 1) Clear SSbD definitions and elements like principles, practices and permissions to consistently guide everyday decisions; 2) Alignment of SSbD with supply chain activities to ensure responsible sourcing and reduction of Scope 3 GHG emissions; and 3) Stepan’s custom tool for product assessment aligned with SSbD categories relevant to the cleaning products market. Examples of various strategy lanes being explored within the context of surfactants manufacturing developers will be described.
