Lalit Chordia
Lalit Chordia, CEO of thar Process, LLC, has been a serial entrepreneur for over 30 years. He has pioneered research and development, manufacturing and commercialization of environmentally friendly, and yet very versatile technology. Dr. Chordia’s work extends across multiple industries to applications in food, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, chemicals energy and water. Some examples of his involvement over the years are natural pharmaceutical and algae extraction, drug purification, coatings, electronics cleaning, advanced cooling, microchannel heat exchangers, biodiesel, ethanol extraction, cellulose to bio-oil, ground source heat pumps, power generation, water desalination and a host of other technologies.
Dr. Chordia received his bachelor’s degree from IIT Madras and his doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University in 1985, both in Chemical Engineering. In 1982, Dr. Chordia co-founded Suprex Corp., and served as Vice President of Engineering and R&D. He then formed Thar Technologies in 1990. Thar expanded its operations into multiple industries both domestically and internationally and has earned a reputation as a world leader in high pressure process and equipment technologies, particularly the use of supercritical carbon dioxide, which has zero ozone depletion and net zero global warming potential. Through Dr. Chordia’s leadership of the company, Thar has spun out a number of companies: 1) Thar Instruments, a separations science and equipment company since sold to Waters Corp., 2) Thar Process, a global provider of all-natural food and chemical processing solutions, 3) Thar Pharmaceuticals, a clinical stage drug development company sold to Grunenthal, 4) Thar Geothermal, a developer of geothermal/ground source technology. 5)Thar Energy, a developer of advanced alternative electricity generation technology through the development of advanced microchannel heat exchangers, 6)Prayog Labs to treat frack water and 7)Thar Worx, dealing with automation of revenue cycle management.
Dr. Chordia has been recognized for his pioneering work in technology and entrepreneurship. He was made the Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Distinguish Alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology. In 2002 he received the National Small Business Exporter of the Year award from the Small Business Administration and the Carnegie Science Entrepreneur of the Year award. Further, Ernst and Young gave him the Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2017. He previously received the Manufacturer of the Year award from Pittsburgh Business Times. His company Thar Process was named as the Fastest Growing Company in 2020 by the Pittsburgh Business Times. His companies have received over $15 million dollars worth of grants from various government agencies to develop energy technologies.
He has been awarded over 20 patents and over 30 presentations and patents.
Beyond his own business and to remain loyal to his community commitment, Dr. Chordia is a Board Member of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation and Sister Cities of Pittsburgh, serves on the Steering Committee for Sustainable Pittsburgh, is a Co-founder of the US-India Forum and is an Adjunct Research Scientist at the Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University. He also served on the Allegheny County Green Action Team and was an appointee of the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to the Western Pennsylvania District Export Council.
