Sophie Roelants, PhD

Dr. ir. Sophie ROELANTS (F) is COO of AmphiStar, a spin off company from Ghent University and the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant focusing on microbial biosurfactants. Sophie has over 15 years of broad experience in the field of Microbial Biosurfactants focusing on synthetic biology, process development and scale up. As Innovation Manager Biosurfactants she managed several international projects on the development of microbial strains, fermentation- and purification processes, scale up and application development for (new-to-nature) biosurfactants. She built up a broad stakeholder network in this field over the past 14 years and is co-founder of AmphiStar. Sophie holds a degree in Bio Science Engineering (Ghent University, 2007) and a PhD in Applied Biological Sciences (Ghent University, 2013). Her research resulted in over 50 peer-reviewed publications, 5 book chapters and the co-inventorship of 8 patent applications. In July 2021 Sophie set up AmphiStar together with four other founders and is now focusing on growing the company with the mission of making biosurfactants mainstream. Together with the founding team she very recently secured a 6mE funding round.
