Dr David Appleton joined Sime Darby Plantation Research & Development in 2010 as the Head of Applied Chemistry at Sime Darby Technology Centre. He was promoted to Head of Biotechnology and Breeding in 2015, overseeing the development and commercialisation of GenomeSelect and other genetics, breeding, and biotechnology programmes.In 2020, he assumed the role of Head, Product Innovation and Development for Sime Darby Oils, the downstream division of SDP, before moving back to R&D in 2023 to take up the role of Deputy Chief Research and Development Officer, and then Chief Research and Development Officer in January, 2024. Dr Appleton, a New Zealander, moved to Malaysia in 2008 on attachment to Universiti Malaya after working for five years as a Principal Research Scientist in Drug Discovery with MerLion Pharmaceuticals in Singapore. He obtained a PhD in Chemistry from The University of Auckland, New Zealand.
