Professor Dharma R. Kodali is a world-recognized expert in lipids and new product development and has 44 years of research experience in academia and industry. He is currently an Adjunct Professor in Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Previously he was a professor at University of Minnesota and at Boston University studying the fundamental aspects of structurally defined lipids synthesis, molecular packing, properties and their influence on metabolism and development of value-added products. His industrial experience includes working as Principal Scientist and Manager at Cargill and as a Senior Principal Scientist at General Mills, developing several new products from concept to commercialization. His primary areas of research continue to be developing value-added products from fats, oils and agricultural materials for food and industrial applications.
Professor Kodali authored or co-authored over 80 publications and book chapters and edited two books on trans fats. He is an inventor/co-inventor on 30 patents. Professor Kodali’s research contributions and industrial inventions were recognized by various professional organizations and institutions - Stephen S. Chang Award, for distinguished accomplishments in research and development of products related to lipids, from AOCS in 2020; Alton E. Bailey Award, for outstanding contributions to the science and technology of lipids, from AOCS in 2018; AOCS Fellow in 2010; TL Mounts Award, for making significant science and technological contributions to edible oils in food products, from AOCS in 2003; Industrial Innovation Award, for creativity and global welfare through innovation of a new commercialized product, from American Chemical Society in 2002; and Cargill Chairman’s Innovation Award for the highest technical achievement in 2001. Professor Kodali was an invited speaker from various societies and institutions and lectured in numerous countries, including Canada, Japan, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, China and India.
