Crude Vegetable Oils are extracted from oil bearing seeds by using mainly two technologies, mechanical extraction (pressing) and solvent extraction (percolation of hexane through a layer of material). Prior bringing the seeds to the extraction process, several operations called seed preparation are performed. They include thermal treatments, mechanical purifications, and size reductions of the seeds. Both seed preparation and oil extraction will be discussed.
