Effect of C12 Content in the Alkyl Distribution of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates on Laundry and Dishwashing Performance

The impact of the alkyl distribution, 2-phenyl level and amount of dialkyltetralin in linear alkyl benzene sulfonates (LAS) on laundry detergent and hand dishwashing formulations is widely recognized. This study specifically focuses on the effect of the alkyl distribution on laundry and dishwashing cleaning performance. A new LAS with a new alkyl distribution having more than 50% C12 was evaluated and compared to the standard LAS with a standard alkyl distribution having less than 50% C12. To better understand the impact of the alkyl distribution, various physical-chemical properties of LAS, such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, foam stability, and hardness tolerance, are measured. The study thoroughly evaluates the efficacy of the new LAS, comparing its performance to the standard LAS version, both as a standalone surfactant and within formulations for laundry and dishwashing. Formulation stability is assessed through visual observations of clarity via freeze-thaw method, while formulation viscosity is precisely measured using the Anton Parr viscometer. Laundry tests involve 100% cotton swatches pre-stained with various types of soils, examined at 20 oC. Additionally, hand dishwashing performance is evaluated through plate count tests at ambient temperature. This comprehensive investigation provides insight into how the detailed interplay of C12 content in LAS influences its diverse applications in homecare formulations.
