Renewable diesel feedstocks; used cooking oil (UCO), animal fats, crude vegetable oils, or blends thereof, contain metal ion and phospholipid contaminants which can reduce the life of precious metal catalysts used in the production of renewable diesel. These impurities are typically removed in a pre-treatment process incorporating water-wash, chemical degumming, and dry-washing. This presentation goes into detail on the types of filter aids; diatomaceous earth, bleaching earth, silica gel, etc. and mechanisms such as adsorption, metal chelation, and hydration of soap compounds used in the dry-wash process, and the latest developments to deliver optimal impurity removal performance based on a variety of feedstocks typically found at existing and future biorefineries. This presentation goes into detail on the types of filter aids; bleaching earth, silica gel, etc. and mechanisms such as adsorption, chelation, and hydration; and the latest developments for optimal impurity removal for biorefineries.
